It is possible to be doing the right things and still lose focus. Not because you have turned away from God, but because your attention has shifted. And when focus shifts, direction eventually follows.
Jesus said, “Seek first the kingdom of God” (Matthew 6:33). He did not say only. He said first. When that order gets out of place, things begin to feel off. Not necessarily because something is wrong, but because something is out of alignment.
One of the most subtle dangers in the life of a believer is distraction. Not everything that pulls your attention is sin. Many times, it is simply misplaced priorities. Over time, that loss of focus begins to affect consistency.
That is why Scripture tells us to examine ourselves. “Check up on yourselves… do you pass the test?” (2 Corinthians 13:5). This is not for condemnation. This is for alignment. There are times when we have to stop and ask, “Am I still focused? Am I still disciplined? Am I still putting God first?”
Focus determines direction. A person who looks at distractions will move toward them. But a person who keeps their eyes on God’s promises will remain steady. The Bible says, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all” (Psalm 34:19). Challenges may come, but they do not have the final say.
In order to stay on course, there must also be a willingness to adjust. Life does not always go according to plan. Schedules change. Situations shift. But instead of stopping, we adapt and keep moving forward.
If a person wants a different life, they cannot keep repeating the habits that built the one they are trying to leave. Change requires change. That may mean adjusting routines, priorities, or how time is being used.
Another key to staying on course is remembering what God has already done. Scripture says, “Earnestly remember the former things which I did of old; for I am God” (Isaiah 46:9). When you remember how God has provided, opened doors, and made a way before, it strengthens your faith for where you are now.
Staying on course requires focus, adjustment, and consistency. It requires a willingness to realign when needed and to keep moving forward without drifting.
Life may shift, but God does not. And when we stay aligned with Him, we stay on course.
