Life will have its ups and life will have its downs. That is not negativity. That is reality. Jesus said, “In the world you shall have tribulation” (John 16:33). He did not say we might have trouble. He said we would. But He also told us to be of good cheer because He has overcome the world. That means we do not face trouble from a place of defeat. We face it from a place of victory.

One of the greatest dangers in difficult seasons is allowing the downs of life to affect our mindset. If we are not careful, hard times will begin to shape our attitude, our perspective, and our expectations. A person can begin to feel as though God has disappeared, as though the promises no longer work, or as though they should be further along by now. But God has not changed. He said, “Fear not, for I am with you… I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10). Even in the downs, God is still with us.

Life is only as good as your mindset. A negative mind will not produce a positive life. If a person constantly thinks in terms of defeat, delay, and disappointment, they will struggle to recognize what God is doing. But faith sees differently. Faith believes that God is working, even when things are not yet visible. Faith says that favor surrounds us like a shield. Faith says that God is working behind the scenes. Faith says that many are the afflictions of the righteous, “but the Lord delivers him out of them all” (Psalm 34:19). That one verse gives both realism and hope. There may be many afflictions, but there is also complete deliverance.

In order to stay on course, we must also adjust our focus. The enemy will always try to distract us. He will use bad news, difficult people, frustrating situations, delays, and disappointments to get our eyes off of God’s promises. But believers must learn to keep their attention on the goodness of God and on where He is leading them. We do not deny that problems exist, but we refuse to let those problems become bigger in our thinking than the Word of God.

Sometimes staying on course also requires adjustment. If a person wants a different life, they cannot keep repeating the habits that built the one they are trying to escape. Change requires change. If certain routines, distractions, or patterns are holding a person back, they must be willing to examine them honestly. Scripture tells us to “check up on yourselves” and to give ourselves regular spiritual examination (2 Corinthians 13:5, paraphrased). That means we do not drift along carelessly. We stop and ask whether our priorities, habits, and disciplines are helping us become what God desires.

This kind of reflection is necessary because it is easy to lose focus without realizing it. Not everything that pulls us away is sin. Sometimes it is simply misplaced priorities. A person can spend too much time on things that do not strengthen their spirit, advance their purpose, or help them stay on course. That is why self-examination matters. If something is off, it needs to be adjusted.

Another key to staying on course is remembering the victories God has already given. There are times when we must remember how God provided before, healed before, opened doors before, and made a way before. Isaiah says, “Earnestly remember the former things which I did of old; for I am God, and there is no one else” (Isaiah 46:9). Remembering what God has done strengthens faith for what we are facing now. His past faithfulness becomes a reminder that He will not fail us in the present.

Staying on course through the ups and downs of life requires more than emotion. It requires faith, focus, adjustment, and remembrance. It requires the believer to keep moving, keep trusting, and keep making the changes necessary to align with what God is doing. Life may have its highs and lows, but God is still faithful through them all. If we keep our eyes on Him, He will help us stay the course.
